A substance abuse assessment is a clinical evaluation conducted by a licensed evaluator to determine the extent of an individual's substance use and to recommend an appropriate level of treatment or education. If you have been ordered by a court to complete a substance abuse assessment — often as part of a DUI, drug possession, or probation case — understanding what the process involves can help you prepare and reduce anxiety.
The assessment typically takes 60 to 90 minutes and is conducted in a private, one-on-one setting. At Schroeder Counseling, all assessments are available via secure video conference (Zoom), allowing you to complete the evaluation from the comfort and privacy of your own home.
During the assessment, the licensed evaluator will ask you a series of structured questions about your substance use history, including what substances you have used, how frequently, and for how long. You will also be asked about any previous treatment episodes, family history of substance use, and the circumstances surrounding your current legal situation.
The evaluator may use standardized screening tools such as the CAGE questionnaire, AUDIT (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test), or DAST (Drug Abuse Screening Test) to quantify risk levels. These tools are validated clinical instruments that help the evaluator make objective, evidence-based recommendations.
Based on the information gathered, the evaluator will determine your recommended level of care. Recommendations typically fall into one of several categories: no treatment needed, substance abuse education (such as a drug and alcohol awareness class), outpatient counseling, intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), or inpatient/residential treatment.
After the assessment, the evaluator prepares a written report — typically 3 to 5 pages — that includes the assessment findings, diagnostic impressions, and treatment recommendations. This report is designed to be court-ready, meaning it includes all the information that judges, probation officers, and attorneys need to review your case.
At Schroeder Counseling, assessment reports are typically completed within 1-3 business days of the evaluation. We can send the report directly to your court, probation officer, or attorney upon request.
Tips for preparing: Be honest and forthcoming during the assessment — evaluators are trained professionals and accuracy is important for proper recommendations. Bring any court documents that specify what type of assessment is required. Have a list of any medications you are currently taking. If you have completed any prior treatment or education, bring documentation.
