Completing your court-ordered class is only half the battle — you also need to ensure that your completion certificate is accepted by your court or probation department. Here are practical tips to maximize the likelihood of first-time acceptance.
Before enrolling in any program, contact your court or probation officer to confirm what type of program is required, how many hours you need to complete, whether there are any specific provider requirements, and whether online classes are accepted for your case.
Choose a provider led by a credentialed professional (such as a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor, Licensed Professional Counselor, or Licensed Clinical Social Worker), and ask whether your court requires a particular credential.
Make sure the class format matches what your court requires. If your court requires live instruction, a self-paced video course will not meet it. If your court requires a specific number of hours, make sure you enroll in the correct hour format.
Review your certificate before submitting it. A court-ready certificate should include: your full legal name (matching your court records), the exact program name, the total number of hours completed, the date(s) of each session attended, the instructor's full name and professional credentials, and contact information for verification (phone and email).
Submit your certificate properly. If your court requires the certificate to be submitted by mail, make sure you send the original or a certified copy. If your probation officer accepts email, ask your provider to send the certificate directly. Keep copies of everything for your records.
If your certificate is not accepted, do not panic. Contact the provider immediately to find out what the court needs and whether the certificate can be modified or supplemented. At Schroeder Counseling, if the court or probation department gives you written notice that it will not accept your certificate, contact us within 30 days of completing your program with that notice and you get a full refund under our court-acceptance guarantee.
