When courts order a drug class
Courts and probation departments often order a drug education class after a lower-level drug offense. Common reasons include:
- Possession of marijuana or a small amount of another drug
- Possession of drug paraphernalia
- A first drug offense handled through diversion
- A condition of probation
- A school or employer requirement
Your paperwork may call it a drug class, drug education, a substance awareness class or a drug and alcohol class. What matters is the number of hours, and whether the order asks for a class, an assessment or treatment.

Class, assessment or treatment?
A drug class is education you attend for a set number of hours. An assessment, also called an evaluation, is a one-on-one interview that ends with a written recommendation. Treatment is clinical care, such as outpatient counseling. If your order says “assessment,” “evaluation” or “follow all recommendations,” start with a substance abuse evaluation, not a class.

How many hours, and what it costs
Book exactly the number of hours on your paperwork. Prices for the drug and alcohol awareness class:
- 4 hours: $100
- 8 hours: $175
- 12 hours: $250
- 16 hours: $325
How the online class works
Every class is live on Zoom with Jennifer Schroeder, M.S., CADC, and attendance is checked during class. You pick your first class when you book, and schedule any remaining classes from your client portal. The moment your booking is paid, we email you a Proof of Enrollment letter for your probation officer.
Your signed letter of completion is emailed to you the day you finish your required hours, with a certificate ID anyone can check at schroedercounseling.com/verify.
Before you book
Your court or probation department decides which classes it accepts, so confirm the hours and whether a live online class is allowed. Our class is education, not treatment or DUI school. If your requirement comes from a DMV, the Secretary of State, or a DUI school or program, confirm with them before you book.
